In 1875 some English gentlemen founded the first fishing society in the area, the Wuoksi Fishing Club. The club took the small Isle of Varpasaari as it’s home base and stayed there until the club was closed in 1949.

After decades of silence and massive investments in water conservation, the fishing ground was revived. A new base for fishermen, the Vuoksi Fishing Park, was openend in 1987 and the Wuoksi Fishing Club was brought back to life to carry on the long fishing tradition on the River Vuoksi.

The town has provided fishing permits for the river since 1983. Improved services and regular plantings of fish have made the Vuoksi once again an excellent place for fishing and experiencing the nature for all kinds of fishermen, children and adults.
